This training module is part of the comprehensive suite of training and certification offered by the global leaders in inclusive aquatics, Autism Swim.
Autism Swim (AS) provides a range of professional development services for aquatic professionals working with Neurodiverse participants in and around the water. Autism Swim and STA have partnered to offer introductory training modules for those not quite ready to undertake the full training and certification. In this module we discuss the relationship between Aquatics and Neurodiversity and what adaptations or inclusions your teaching style may need to assist Neurodiverse participants to achieve their goals.
By the end of the module, providers will be able to:
- Explain the physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits of swimming and aquatic programs
- Acknowledge the increased drowning statistics for participants on the autism spectrum and other Neurodiverse participants, and some of the associated reasons why
- Identify and use relevant swimming aids and sensory tools during aquatic sessions
- Identify when and when not to use floatation devices during aquatic sessions to promote independence
- Utilise enrolment forms and initial assessment processes appropriate for Neurodiverse participants
